Pinewood Derby – 2016
The Pinewood Derby is an annual Cub Scout tradition where a Scout and adult build a model car to race against others in their den. This is a great
opportunity for a Cub Scout to build confidence and learn new skills.

|9:45 AM – Races Begin!|
Since this race is a fun event competition, the Cub Scout should be given the satisfaction of building his own car from the kit with the guidance and minimal assistance from the parent or other responsible party. Additional information can be obtained by using the specification guidelines enclosed in the OFFICIAL GRAND PRIX PINEWOOD DERBY CAR KIT, the Cub Scout How-To Book, the Cub Scout Leader Book, and various other sources. Remember, the purpose of this event is to provide our Scouts with an opportunity to do three things:
- Design their own racing vehicle to meet certain specifications.
- Build that same race vehicle from the resources provided in the standard kit.
- Race that vehicle against other Cub Scouts who have followed the same rules.
A Scout Is Trustworthy
This principle from the Boy Scout Law applies to everyone. Honesty is the true measure of any human being. When you win the Pinewood Derby, do so honestly. Follow our Pack’s rules. If a speed tip or product is not allowed in our Derby, don’t use it. If you want to use a particular speed tip but you aren’t sure whether it’s legal, clear it with the race organizer before you start building your car.
Be honest – it’s the Scouting way!
Pinewood Derby Rules and Sportsmanship Pledge
Before your Scouts begin construction of their car, please carefully review the rules governing the race. Please print out and sign the sportsmanship pledge also. The signed sportsmanship pledge must be turned in on race day.
